History

The name Banksia is derived from the botanist on board the Voyage of Discovery, Joseph Banks. Along with James Cook, he explored Botany Bay in 1770. Houses were built in Banksia in the late 19th century. Before that, the land was mostly used for timber. A railway line reached Banksia in 1906, bringing money and commerce with it.

Banksia has a number of great shopping areas dotted in and around the houses. Near the railway station there’s a row of shops including the charming Banksia Bakery, a corner shop, and a take-away. The National Film and Sound Archive can be found in the town, as well as Gardiner Park and a pleasant market garden.
