Hornsby is a suburb in New South Wales that is situated on the upper north shore of Sydney. It has a population of over 19,800 and is 25 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district.

History

This suburb was established on the lands of the Kurringgai and Darug people. The name Hornsby comes from Samuel Henry Home. He was a convict and later a constable who was granted land which he named Hornsby Place.

Thomas Higgins was the first European settler in the area. Private developers were responsible for the residential growth in Hornsby.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Hornsby is a busy commercial centre with traditional high streets and shopping areas. The eastern side of the suburb is home to the Westfield Hornsby shopping centre.

The suburb of Hornsby boasts the Hornsby Aquatic Centre, Edgeworth David Gardens, Lisgar Gardens and Ginger Meggs Park. There are also many private and public schools in the area.
